The town acquired the Century Enterprise Center (CEC) in 1999 through tax foreclosure. Once a thriving brass manufacturing plant the building had been allowed to fall into disrepair by the new owners after the plant closed in 1985. The largest problem plaguing the CEC is contamination from PCB's that leaked from transformers and asbestos that has been released from pipe wrappings and roofing materials.

Thus far the town has successfully completed the environmental remediation of the exterior hazardous substances.  Phase I of the interior remediation, including asbestos decontamination and removal of concrete and underlying soils containing high levels of PCB’s, has been completed.  Phase II of the interior remediation is anticipated to begin July 1, 2007 and should be
completed by the end of September.

Phase II work will include removal and disposal of contaminated asphalt, concrete and soil; removal and disposal of combined porous/non-porous materials; and decontamination and removal of non-porous materials.
