ARTS, COMMISSION ON THE
The New Milford Commission on the Arts was established in 1977, by Ordinance to fund, advise on, originate, coordinate and encourage, within the Town, participation in, and promotion, development, acceptance and appreciation of, artistic and cultural activities, which shall include, but are not limited to, music, theater, dance, painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, films and allied arts and crafts, and to this end may join or contract with consultants, private patrons, individual artists and ensembles and with institutions, local sponsoring organizations and professional organizations.
The Commission is a volunteer organization that maintains monthly meetings that are open to the general public. Agendas and Minutes of these meetings are held on file in the New Milford Town Clerk's Office per the Freedom of Information Act requirements.
The Edwin Kinkade Annual August concert series is performed outdoors on New Milford's historical bandstand. A different concert is scheduled each Saturday in August, beginning at 7:30 pm. Concerts are FREE, open to the public and suitable for all ages. Programs are weather permitting and subject to change. We suggest you bring a blanket or chair to sit on.
The Annual Carol Sing on the New Milford bandstand is usually held on a Monday evening prior to Christmas. In 2014, the carol sing will be held December 15, 2014 at 7:00 pm.
Additionally, the commission organizes programs performed in the New Milford Railroad Station, including music, dance, and poetry readings. The railroad station is a small venue (about 50 seats) with wonderful acoustics.
Guided by New Milford Commission on the Arts, Gallery 25 and Creative Arts Studio is a new cooperative fine art gallery for western CT area professional and emerging artists and artisans, representing all media of visual fine art. The gallery is located at 25 Church Street in New Milford, CT. Gallery hours are Thursday – Saturday from 10 – 5. Programs are being scheduled for some Sunday afternoons and some evenings. A variety of classes and workshops are being offered. For class information, visit the blog (link below), facebook page (link below), or stop by the gallery.
Artist submissions are by appointment and each artist’s work is juried. All artists juried into the gallery agree to pay a yearly “membership” fee, host the gallery twice a month, help with gallery duties, pay a commission on all sales, and other related gallery needs.
The gallery welcomes suggestions for visual arts programs, and adult fine art and artisan events. Please e-mail your idea or stop by the gallery.
